Maxian T600 PMP DVR

Maxian T600 PMP DVR.jpgHere’s an answer to the age-old question of how to get video onto your portable media player without spending hours ripping, decrypting and encoding — and, no, it doesn’t involve using iTunes. The Maxian T600 is one of a growing number of PMPs with that most coveted feature: the ability to record video directly from a television or other source, such as a DVD player. The T600 also includes a timer mode, so you use it as a quasi-DVR; allows transfer of videos back to a PC; and supports USB OTG so you can offload videos to an external drive without going through the PC first. The T600 also includes a 20 or 30GB drive, a 4-inch widescreen display and the ability to play back DivX, Xvid and most other video formats.

By connecting to TV with TV-out, you can enjoy big screen. Direct recording from TV is possible and you can set a certain program to be recorded beforehand.

With USB host function (OTG), files can be transferred to digital camera, MP3P, or external HDD back and forth without a pc.

It features 4-inch 16:9 wide TFT LCD and supports playback of almost video/audio file formats without a separate converting process. A battery is detachable and it runs for 6 hours (video clips).

It comes in two colors: black and white. It retails for about 400,000(KRW) (that is near $390.00 USD).

Archos AV 700

archos_av700.jpgThe Archos AV700 is the top-of-the-line when it comes to the Archos’ product line of portable video recorder. It costs almost $800 for the 100GB model. There is a 40GB version which is a bit less at around $600. What makes the AV700 special is its gigantic 7-inch LCD screen and the ability to schedule recordings of your favorite TV shows as well as transfer music or video files from the PC.

The movies in the pocket? With the mobile time television set and numerical video tape recorder, the French manufacturer Archos reveals officially the AV700, a new multi-media walkman with a screen of 7 inches and a hard disk of 40 GB or 100 GB.

Video tape recorder, the AV 700 records in MPEG-4 video flows of television in quality DVD but is also able to read video flows DivX or WindowsMedia Video (with DRM) of future kiosks of video remote loading on Internet.

Easy to connect to the television set, the AV 700 can also be connected to other terminals. Thanks to port USB Host and an explorer of files, one can for example connect with a numerical camera and to handle or move the images towards the AV 700. It is also theoretically possible to connect a key USB, a keyboard USB or a joystick.

Targeting the families and the technophiles, Archos understood well the current passion for the image and the numerical cinema and intends to offer a product to them all in one, simple to use, able to leave the show and to accompany them in transport (subway, car, plane...) or in their second home.

Among the other specifications, one can mention the removable battery, the hub of connection TV, the entries and audio exits, the port with infra red and the remote control, the two loudspeakers, a cover of voyage or an adapter light cigar. The apparatus does not have however tuner for the direct reception of television but Archos seems to work narrowly with DibCom to propose a Dvb-t receiver, able to collect the chains of the TNT in future products.

Contrary to Archos LDC 400, the AV700 not has an operating system Linux but an operating system owner which entirely was re-examined and corrected. It is available among other things in French language and gives access quickly the principal functions of the apparatus of pocket.

Panasonic Scan DVD Video Recorder with 400 GB

dmr-e500hs.jpgCheck yourself with the progressive Scan DVD Video Recorder with Built-in 400 GB Hard Disk, Ethernet Network Connection, and TV Guide On Screen™ - Records to DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs.
Your hectic schedule isn't always compatible with TV program schedules, so being able to quickly locate your favorite shows and record them for later viewing is important. The TV Guide On Screen™ Electronic Program Guide lets you easily find your favorite programs and set up your DVD recorder to record them unattended. Explore program listings up to 8 days in advance, searching by genre or keyword to help narrow down your choices. Once you've found what you want in the listings, simply select the program and your DVD recorder will automatically begin recording at the preset time.

View Recorded Video and Pictures Over Your Home Network
Typically, if you record a show on your hard disk recorder in the living room, then the living room is where you'll have to watch it later. There's no portability. The DMR-E500HS does away with that inconvenience by utilizing your home network. Connect multiple DMR-E500HS DVD recorders together via their Ethernet connections and serve up recorded video and JPEG images to different decks throughout your home. If you get sleepy while watching a show you previously recorded in your living room, head into your bedroom for the rest of the show; the DMR-E500HS in your living room can send its hard disk content to the deck in your bedroom. You can even stream MPEG4 videos and JPEG still images from the DMR-E500HS hard disk to your PC for viewing2.

Watch and Record At the Same Time
You sit down to watch this week's episode of your favorite show and realize that you never got around to watching your recording of last week's episode. Not a problem with Time Slip™, featuring simultaneous record and play. Select this week's episode in the program guide, start recording, and as it records you can watch your recording of last week's episode.

What if you set up your DVD recorder to record a movie from 8:00 to 10:00 while you're out, but dinner was faster than you expected and you get home early? With our Chasing Playback feature, you don't have to wait for the program to finish recording in order to watch it. You can begin watching the portion of the program that has already been saved while the DVD recorder continues recording the remainder of the program.

Avoid Accidentally Recording Over A Program
If you own a VCR, it's almost certain that at some point someone has accidentally recorded over a movie or show that you wanted to keep. One-Touch Record will save your favorite programs from the same fate by automatically scanning the disc for blank space before starting the recording process. No more worries that your favorite sitcom's season finale will be overwritten by a family member's Sunday fishing show.

Browse Through Your Recordings Using Thumbnails
You and your family are sure to enjoy the convenience of your DVD recorder so much that you'll have a large library of recordings in no time. Keeping track of all those programs would be difficult if it weren't for our enhanced Direct Navigator, which displays thumbnails of every program on the disc as you browse, making it easy to identify the contents of each recording.

Built-In 400GB3 Hard Disk Recorder
The massive capacity of the built-in hard disk means you'll have plenty of space to record shows for everyone in the house. Record lots of programming, figure out what you want to keep, then move it to DVD-R/RAM in minutes for long-term storage.

Film-Like Image Quality
The goal of any playback device should be accurate reproduction of the original content. In the case of DVDs, most of that content is film-based. Utilizing advanced progressive scan4 playback techniques and very accurate MPEG video decoders, this DVD recorder provides an image that faithfully represents the image you see at your favorite movie theater.

Iomega Micro Mini

Iomega Micro Mini.gifIomega's 64MB Micro Mini, the smallest drive we tested, is about half the size of your thumb. Measuring just 1.5 inches long, 0.62 inches wide, and 0.38 inches thick, it won't obstruct any adjacent USB ports on your PC, although it's liable to disappear if you don't keep your eye on it. The Micro Mini comes with three interchangeable caps in a variety of colors (in our case, black, dark blue, and orange), plus a ball-chain necklace and a belt hook for those inclined toward accessorizing. The Iomega Micro Mini's cap swivels to expose the USB interface, and a blue LED blinks during file transfers.

The coolest thing about the Micro Mini is that it comes with Iomega's handy and unique Active Disk technology, which lets you use certain applications on any computer you plug into, even if the computer doesn't have those programs installed. A number of Active Disk-enabled programs are available for free on Iomega's Web site, including Preclick, a photo-editing app; PocoMail for e-mail; Musicmatch Jukebox, a digital-music player; and many more. Take note, however, that these programs use space on the already space-challenged 64MB Micro Mini. You don't need to install any software to use the Iomega Micro Mini. However, if you're using Windows 98 or an earlier version of the OS, you'll have to download drivers from Iomega's Web site. The same goes for Mac fans using OS 8.6 or older.

Iomega plans to release versions of the Micro Mini with higher capacities. The 64MB model costs about $50, or about 78 cents per megabyte, which is fairly expensive compared to the cost of other drives we looked at. However, Iomega's larger Mini drive is available in capacities ranging from 128MB to 1GB, and the 128MB model costs around $70, which is a better deal per megabyte than the Micro Mini.

Linksys Wireless-B Media Adapter

Linksys Wireless-B Media Adapter.gifThe latest entry in the emerging category of digital audio receivers and media adapters is the Linksys Wireless-B media adapter, also know as the WMA11B. It uses your existing wireless home network to link your PC and entertainment center. The WMA11B works as advertised, streaming MP3s to your stereo and displaying digital snapshots on your TV, but considering that this 802.11b media adapter doesn't support video and lacks certain security features, it's pricey. Still, if you're itching to connect your living room to the rest of your wireless home network, the WMA11B is the best media adapter we've seen so far.

Velocity Micro Gamers' Edge DualX T1300

Velocity Micro Gamers' Edge DualX T1300.gifWould any self-respecting gamer buy off the shelf from a big-box retailer? The Gamer's Edge DualX T1300 represents Velocity Micro's entry into the electronics retail channel. Available in Best Buy retail outlets and online through BestBuy.com, the $1,991 T1300 is a serious gaming machine with an Nvidia GeForce 7800 GT video card and an AMD Athlon 64 3800+ CPU. It's one of three configurations offered by the retail giant (but the only one you'll see in stores), bringing boutique craftsmanship to off-the-shelf shoppers. Available only online are the more expensive T1400 model, with a dual-core Athlon 64 X2 4400+ processor, and the cheaper T1200, with an Athlon 64 3700+ CPU. The T1300 may appear pricey next to the mainstream systems sitting next to it on the shelf, but for a gaming PC, it's a smart configuration that gives you good bang for your gaming buck.

The Gamer's Edge DualX T1300 is housed in Velocity Micro's Signature LX-W case, a well-built black-aluminum chassis with silver trim, a side-panel window, and four caster wheels. The interior is well organized and well lit, thanks to a blue-cathode lighting kit and blue-lit cooling fans. The front door panel conceals four 5.25-inch drive bays and two 3.5-inch bays. A double-layer DVD burner and a DVD-ROM drive occupy two of the larger bays. The T1300 has a floppy drive as well, but it lacks a memory-card reader--a must for multimedia enthusiasts. Two USB 2.0 ports and a FireWire port share space on the lower-front bezel with headphone and microphone jacks. Rear-accessible connections include four USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire port, an Ethernet connection, and jacks for the onboard eight-channel audio, which is disabled because the system comes with a Creative Audigy2 ZS sound card.

The T1300's 2.4GHz Athlon 64 3800+ processor runs on an Asus A8N SLI motherboard with 1GB of DDR400 memory. A 250GB Western Digital Serial ATA (SATA) drive provides adequate storage for most multimedia projects, and the removable drive-bay cage has room for four additional hard drives.

Although the system comes with a single eVGA Nvidia GeForce 7800 GT graphics card, the motherboard is SLI compatible, meaning you can stick an identical 7800 GT card in the second x16 PCIe slot for a dual-card performance boost. This is a do-it-yourself job, since the T1300 is sold as is and is not customizable at the time of sale.

Prismiq IWR-5010 Commander Wireless Router

Prismiq IWR-5010 Commander Wireless Router.gifNeed to monitor your employees' Web use? Want to keep an eye on your kids' online interactions or see what sites they're looking at? If you answered yes, Prismiq's Commander IWR-5010 is the wireless router for you. Not only does it offer a sneak peek into what clients are doing and where they're surfing, it provides transcripts of instant messages. Thanks to Prismiq's Internet Warning and Control software, or IWACS, the IWR-5010 sets the pace in monitoring a network's operations, client activity, and data flow. Unfortunately, it lags on performance. But if you think average network speeds are a fair trade-off for network monitoring and a low price tag (the suggested retail price is $80, but Prismiq is offering a $20 rebate for customers who trade in an old router), then this is the router for you. If you value performance over the ability to spy on loved ones, check out the Belkin Wireless Pre-N router.

The Prismiq Commander IWR-5010 router comes with an AC adapter, a Cat-5 cable, a quick-setup guide, a CD with software and a 110-page electronic manual, and a pair of feet for standing the router on its side (you can also mount it on a wall). It has four wired ports, an uplink jack, and LEDs to show that it's online and which ports it's using. The IWR-5010 also has a recessed reset button and a gold-plated antenna connector so that you can boost range with an external antenna (included). The router provides a USB 1.1 outlet, but it's only for saving or restoring the unit's configuration.

As versatile as a Swiss Army Knife, the IWR-5010 router can play a variety of networking roles, including a wireless gateway, an access-point add-on for an existing network, or a WDS wireless bridge for extending a network without cables.

Getting started couldn't be easier, thanks to the setup wizard, which asks five questions and configures the router according to your responses. We got online in about five minutes. If you prefer a more hands-on configuration, you can tap into the HTML-based configuration windows, which are detailed and thorough, although their dark-blue background can make the information hard to read. Using the configuration window, you can easily change basic settings such as the router's SSID and whether it uses a static IP address or lets a DHCP server dole them out automatically. You can block access to the LAN based on the client's MAC address.

Security on the IWR-5010 includes both WEP and WPA encryption. The router's firewall is adequate, with network-address-translation features and the ability to block access to questionable sites.

The Prismiq Commander IWR-5010 router is like an Internet control system that monitors the network and restricts access to questionable content. Its Internet Warning and Control Software (IWACS) not only lets you see who is connected, it also lets you watch incoming and outgoing traffic. For anxious parents and employers, the unique ability to monitor instant messages through the three major services (AOL, Yahoo, and MSN) is priceless--though your kids and employees won't share that opinion. We hit one snag during start-up, though: the router couldn't connect with the IWACS interface. Updating the router's software solved the problem. IWACS provides excellent logs, and its main screen provides a great at-a-glance view of the network action, but we were dismayed by its lack of a help section to assist with its many features.

The Prismiq Commander IWR-5010 router lacks the high-performance potential of competing MIMO routers, but it has a smaller price tag as well. In testing, the router performed adequately but lagged behind even the 802.11b/g competition, producing a maximum throughput of 19.8Mbps at 10 feet--well off the Netgear's WGU624's 42.1Mbps mark and a little better than half the speed offered by Belkin's MIMO-based Pre-N router. In mixed-mode operations, the top speed dropped to 10.4Mbps. In the long-range test, the Prismiq IWR-5010 reached 11.9Mbps at 200 feet, but that's still behind the U.S. Robotics' 19Mbps, and it pales in comparison with the performance of the MIMO devices we've tested, which stay connected for nearly 400 feet.

Zork, the New Cork for Wines

Zork.JPGDid you know that form the 5 billion wines bottled each year with cork, 10% are getting spoiled. The screw cap has begun capturing market share in recent years but still labours under a downmarket stigma. Now another system looks set to make its mark.

Many people believe the unusually named ZORK is the greatest advancement to winemaking since the treading of the first grapes. ZORK manufactures soft re-sealable wine closures that replicate the performance of a screw cap, but pop like a cork, all without the need for a corkscrew. Adding yet another aspect to the enjoyment of wine, it also effectively reseals the bottle.

It’s not surprising then that the innovative wine closure is finding enthusiastic buyers in the United States and Australia.

Made from 100% recyclable food-grade polymers, ZORK wine closures do not taint wine or scalp its flavours. Easily opened by hand, ZORK retains the celebratory ‘pop’ of a cork while safely protecting the wine to be enjoyed as the winemaker intended.

The most obvious benefits of ZORK are its reliable consistent performance, ease-of-use and cost competitiveness.
